DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS RAISING

Duration: Half day training
Target group: All

The programme gives an introduction to domestic violence, including various definitions, statistics, different forms of domestic violence, effects of domestic violence, the cycle of violence and identify support agencies available to victims. and many different forms of violence which women and children are subject to. The session will also address the support agencies available for victims of domestic violence and abuse.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Duration: 1 day training
Target group: All professionals/groups who have a responsibility to respond to victims and perpetrators. It is recommended that participants have completed the half-day introduction session.

Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in recognising and responding to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. The programme will address the needs of women with particular vulnerabilities: older women, women with mental health problems, women who misuse alcohol or drugs and pregnant women. Participants will gain an understanding of barriers to seeking help, difficulties in identifying non physical abuse and the helping and hindering factors for victims of domestic violence.

THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Duration: Half day training
Target group: All individuals who work with children, young people and/or their parents/guardians

The programme explores the impact that domestic violence has on children, young people and their parents. It will examine the different ways in which children may experience violence from infancy to teenage years: possible indicators: managing disclosure: and support networks.

OLDER VICTIMS & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: OLDER BUT NO SAFER

Duration: 1 day training
Target group: Of special interest to those professionals/groups working with older people in residential or community settings.

Participants will explore domestic violence and older victims, focusing on the impact on victims and families and ways of positively dealing with disclosure. It will look at prevalence, definitions and available research.

Duration: Half day training
Target Group: Human Resource Professionals, Line Managers, Employers of medium-large businesses, Potential Trusted Colleagues

Participants will have the chance to increase knowledge of the impact of domestic violence within the workplace. The programme will address why organisations should develop a response to domestic violence in the workplace, will show how domestic violence impacts upon employees, the session will also make aware the services available to support victims outside the workplace.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRUSTED COLLEAGUE

Duration: Half day training
Target Group: Anyone Wishing to become a Trusted Colleague

This programme aims to increase participants awareness and understanding of domestic violence and also the role of the Trusted Colleague. The session will enable participants to ensure effective response to disclosure, increase confidence in ability to support colleagues experiencing domestic violence and also increase awareness of options available for victims, within and outside the workplace.

  • Every minute in the UK, the Police receive a call from the public for assistance for domestic violence. This leads to police receiving an estimated 1,300 calls each day or over 570,000 each year. (Stanko, 2000).

  • On average, two women are killed every week by a current or former male partner

  • One incident of domestic abuse is reported to the police every minute

  • British Crime Survey - an estimated 12.9 million incidents of domestic violence acts (that constituted non-sexual threats or force) against women and 2.5 million against men in England and Wales in the year preceding interview (Walby & Allen, 2004)

  • According to the British Crime Survey, only 40.2% of actual domestic violence crime is reported to the Police (Dodd et al, July 2004)
